(PXP310-334) A potential customer looks at a black 2012 Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle in the showroom of George Matick Chevrolet auto sales in Redford, Michigan January 31, 2012. Many of the headlines out of autoshows in the past couple of years have been captured by the launch of electric cars such as Nissan's Leaf, the Tesla sports car, plug-ins like General Motors' Chevrolet Volt, and the latest incarnation of the Toyota Prius. Other manufacturers including BMW, Rolls Royce and Porsche have presented electric-powered prototypes. On the basis of this, one could be forgiven for thinking the auto industry is betting big on electric power. Yet few auto executives share the optimism of Renault and Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn who has repeatedly said he sees electric vehicles making up 10 percent of all sales in 2020. A survey of 200 auto industry executives conducted by KPMG released on Monday gave an average forecast for electric vehicles to account for 6-10 percent of global auto sales in 2025, more bullish than oil companies BP and Exxon who expect electric cars to make up no more than 4-5 percent of all cars globally in 20-30 years. HONG KONG (Reuters) - Big Wall Street and European banks are looking to slash budgets across Asia, as the emerging market promise is trumped by an urgent need to control costs. From taxi and air fares and year-end parties to entire operational divisions and new country offices, little is sacred. The age of headquarters in New York or London subsidizing investment banking expansion in Asia is giving way to a period of austerity - a shift the industry accepts is long-term, especially given a steep drop in Asia fee income late last year compared to the rest of the world. ... (PXP100-106) U.S. inventor Thomas Alva Edison poses in this photograph taken in the early to mid-1890s by an employee of the Thomas Edison company named W.K.L Dickson. The American inventor Thomas Alva Edison, who made the incandescent light bulb viable for the mass market, also built the world's first electrical distribution system, in New York, using 'direct current' electricity. DC's disadvantage was that it couldn't carry power beyond a few blocks. His Serbia-born rival Nicola Tesla, who at one stage worked with Edison, figured out how to send 'alternating current' through transformers to enable it to step up the voltage for transmission over longer distances.
